Course Description

Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals rely on Patient Care Technicians/Assistants to assist with the critical day-to-day care some patients require. As a Patient Care Technician, you’ll provide hands-on assistance to serve patients’ basic needs, as well as work alongside other healthcare professionals.
 
More and more patients require special care, sometimes around-the-clock. Needs vary from patient to patient, making it vital that the Patient Care Technician/Assistant has a diverse range of knowledge and skills to provide their basic care.
 
As the elderly population increases, healthcare facilities, hospitals and nursing homes have a great demand for qualified Patient Care Technicians/Assistants. Since this profession is needed in many practices, you may have a variety of opportunities available to you.


As a Patient Care Technician/Assistant, you may perform some or all of the following tasks:

  • Provide basic patient care — bathing, feeding, catheter care, etc
  • Acquire, distribute and administer patient care supplies
  • Perform safety checks and ensure cleanliness in patient rooms
  • Accommodate the special needs of patients accordingly
  • Obtain EKG readings and monitor vital signs
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures
  • Provide emotional support to patients and families, particularly coping with grief and death
Externship Protocol
 
Description: 
Externship is a work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts under direct supervision of the clinical professional. This work-experience course will train students in multiple skills to help the provider carry out procedures, interview and care for patients, perform basic lab tests and administer medications. Students will be competent in both clinical and administrative procedures. 
 
Hours: 60 hours
 
Meeting Location: As assigned by Clinical Externship Coordinator.  Externship hours are Monday-Sunday beginning as early as 6am and can go till 11pm.  It is expected for students to be flexible with times and days for clinical sites to accommodate students. Externship placements occur after successful completion of the course and student acknowledges all guidelines stipulated in an externship application. Although it`s rare, students must commit up to a 1 hour (one way) commute or longer depending on student location and are responsible for any expenses associate with such. The student will also be responsible for any expenses (if any) associated with externship onboarding requirements such as background checks & drug screens.
 
Attendance Policy: Students must attend 100% of clinical hours in order to pass competencies. Timesheets are due to the Clinical Coordinator every week.

Outcome

National Association and Certification Exams
 
Graduates receive a certificate for completion of the program. Patient Care Technicians receive hands-on, real-world training from preceptors and instructors that are experienced in the patient care occupation. Students will be prepared for the National Healthcareer Association, Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant (CPCT/A) exam.

Assessment

A virtual classroom is an online classroom that allows participants to communicate with one another, view presentations or videos, interact with other participants, and engage with resources in work groups. This option tends to be non-restricting, affordable, flexible learning, and accessible.
